This book has involveda great deal of effort and perseverance by the authors, chaptereditors, and coordinating editors. The intent ofthis revised editionwas to completely rewrite, expand,and update the first edition to provide both a reference book for the working engineerand a textbook for the mining student. The book has takenfar longer to prepare thanthe original ambitious plan and almost lostsome of its authors, who had alreadywritten their contributions, when the Society hadto shelve the project for two yearsdue to financial constraints.

The Society and the professionare deeply indebted to the authorsand editors who contributed both their knowledge and an enormousamount of time to this project. In addition, a very special acknowledgment is due to Marianne Snedeker, formerly Manager of Publicationsand currently Managerof Book Publishing, and her staff who have kept the projecton course and organized during its development.
