Gravity-based separators have been a mainstay of themineral and coal processing indus- tries for centuries. Georgius Agricoladescribed a sixteenth-centuryapplication of gravity separation for tin and copperrecovery in the book entitled De Re Metallica (1556). Since that time, advances made during the industrial revolution and the more recent develop- ment of magnetic separation technologies (employed for dense-medium recovery) have contributed tomany of the processes employed today. But gravity-based separators still remain the prominent means of producing concentrates from coal, iron ore, rare earths, industrial minerals, tin ores, and tungsten ores. Also, the recycling industry prominently uses gravity separators to recover the variousmaterials from previously disposedwaste.
